Understanding The Operation Of The Catheter

The catheter is a medical instrument in the shape of a tube that is inserted into a body cavity.  The reason for this is drainage, or the administration of fluids or gasses.  While these items are often used in surgery, they are also helpful in home care or in clinical practice.  A person who is unable to urinate naturally may rely on catheterization for bladder drainage.

Catheterization involves inserting a thin and flexible tube into the penis.  This tube is soft when inserted and is used with lubricant; thus it is not a painful procedure.  Some devices are solid or “hard” devices, while others are left in the body permanently (also known as indwelling devices or permcaths).  The latest innovation is that of the external device, which resembles a condom.
